Meet the youngest Filipino bishop who was appointed by Pope Francis

Pope Francis has appointed a new bishop for Iligan city, and he is 46 years young!

On June 13, Thursday, Pope Francis announced the appointment of Father Jose Rapadas as the new Bishop to lead the Diocese of Iligan in Northern Mindanao.

Father Rapadas, who is only 46 years old, is currently the youngest Filipino bishop who is serving inside and outside the Philippines.

But don’t be fooled—Father Rapadas may be young, but he sure has a lot of experience and knowledge––so much so that the Pope entrusted him with such an important role!

A Life of Service

Born in Tondo, Manila in the year 1972, Father Rapadas dedicated most of his life to understanding his faith and serving in Church.

He graduated from the St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in Cagayan de Oro City and was ordained as a priest in 1999. In 2007, he obtained a licentiate degree in dogmatic theology from the Loyola School of Theology in Ateneo de Manila University.

In his 20 years with the priesthood, Father Rapadas has already served in a number of pastoral roles including parish vicar and coordinator of diocesan social pastoral ministry. He has also served as a seminary professor, director of the Office of Catechesis for the Family and Life, rector of the Saint Joseph College Seminary, and professor of religious studies at the University of Zamboanga.

Currently, Father Rapadas is serving as the Vicar General of the Diocese of Ipil in Zamboanga Sibugay. He is set to perform the role until he is officially seated as the new bishop of Iligan city.

The New Bishop of Iligan

Father Rapadas will serve as the fifth Bishop for Iligan. He follows Bishop Elenito Galido, whose death in Dec. 5, 2017 left the diocese under the care of its apostolic administrator, Bishop Severo Caermare of Dipolog.

The city of Iligan has one the largest Catholic populations in Mindanao, with around a million Catholics stationed across its 26 parishes.
