After its postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 10th World Meeting of Families will finally be happening from June 22 to 26, 2022. The triennial gathering was initially slated for June 2021, but was moved for next year as countries temporarily disallowed mass gatherings to avoid the spread of the novel coronavirus.
But with it pushing through next year, the Vatican unveiled the official image of the event recently. (Read: 3 Ways To Bring Your Family Closer to God Amid Mass Suspensions During ECQ)
The artwork is entitled “This Mystery is Great”, an excerpt from St Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, 5:32. It was created by Father Marko Ivan Rupnik, SJ, theologian and artist.
‘Indissoluble love and unity between Christ and the Church’
The official image features the Wedding at Cana, where the bride and groom are in the left-hand side of the background covered with a veil. Meanwhile, Jesus and Mary are seen together during the time when the Blessed Mother told her Son, “They have no more wine.”
St. Paul is visible on the foreground, a classic rendition of his face, as he was the one who removed the bride and groom’s veil and said, “This mystery is great; but I speak in reference to Christ and the Church!”
According to the Vatican, the message behind the official image is the “Sacramental love between a man and a woman is a reflection of the indissoluble love and unity between Christ and the Church: Jesus sheds His blood for Her.”
Fr. Rupnik’s painting is the third symbol of the 10th World Meeting of Families to be released after the official prayer and logo.
Given the pandemic, the Wold Meeting will have a new format it will take on for 2022. Previously, the gathering was small and intimate that not many know about it, but for 2022, it will become a worldwide event to raise awareness about the World Meeting of Families.
“It will be an opportunity provided by Providence to create a worldwide event that can involve all the families that would like to feel part of the ecclesial community,” Pope Francis said. (Read: Pope Francis’ Prayer Intention for August 2021)
The activities during the event will be broadcast throughout the world, according to the pope.
“Rome will be the main venue, and there will be a number of delegates of family pastoral care participating in the Festival of Families, the Pastoral Congress, and the Holy Mass,” he added.
