After conquering the stage of prestigious beauty pageants, Kapuso actress Winwyn Marquez is now joining the training fields in combat boots as she takes basic citizen military training to become a Philippine Navy reservist.
With her heart for public service and continued journey of self-discovery and betterment, the 28-year-old beauty queen started her training amid the community quarantine back in August. (Read: Winwyn Marquez Shares Her Life-Changing PCOS Journey)
“Yes, I’m a beauty queen pero I see this as a new title and I’m proud to share this with everyone —that I’m gonna be a reservist under the marines,” Winwyn said in an interview.
Winwyn, who won the Reina Hispanoamericana in 2017, now spends her weekends doing all different military drills and studying ammunition— from gun safety, dry firing, marksmanship, and assembling and disassembling firearms. And apparently, she was even voted to be class president!
“It’s not about guns or being sent to war. It’s about helping people. And I hope I can inspire others,” Winwyn said.
A New Chapter for Winwyn
“I have always gravitated toward the path of service. I want to be able to protect not only my loved ones and fellowmen in times of emergencies. I would like to take part in civil and military operations, as well as humanitarian work,” Winwyn shared in a virtual conference for I Can See You: High Rise Lovers, her new drama anthology with Kapuso stars Lovi Poe and Tom Rodriguez, which starts airing on October 12.
In an Instagram post, Winwyn reminded everyone to live their dreams and pursue their passion no matter what. “People are asking me why I want to do this… I simply said because I want to.. that’s it. No need for long explanations. We don’t need to justify what we want to do, we can just show them what we women CAN do,” she wrote. (Read: Arci Muñoz Joins Philippine Air Force Reservist Training)
Winwyn is only one of the showbiz personalities who underwent basic citizen military training. Rocco Nacino, Dingdong Dantes, Matteo Guidicelli, and Arci Munoz also trained to be reservists this year.
