Visita Basilica: Seven Minor Basilicas in the Philippines

Over the years, Visita Iglesia (known as the Seven Churches visitation) has evolved into a sort of road trip, complete with an itinerary. Some say that the Seven Churches Visitation is taken from the Book of Revelation, where an angel goes to seven ancient churches. Others insist that it is a nod to the Seven Last Words of Jesus.

However, there are those who would argue that the origins of the Visita Iglesia can be traced back to the 16th century, to St. Philip Neri who would hit the road during the Holy Week. He and his companions would visit seven basilicas in Rome, praying as they walked—and then praying some more once they reached each of the basilicas. If this sounds familiar, it’s because we’ve probably been taking our cue from St. Philip Neri all these years!

Ready for your trip? Buckle up, and let’s go!
