UP Open University Makes Online Bridge Courses Free for Public

The country's leading expert on open and distance elearning will offer free online courses on Math and Science starting July 1.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the community quarantine that is being imposed in the country, schooling at all levels has been greatly affected as the academic year has been cut short to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and all other school staff.

The Department of Education (DepEd) has suggested that school should start by August, as the Department of Health (DOH) affirms it will be safe to do so, as long as health protocols are observed. However, there is still no assurance to this day if the government will allow holding physical classes in the coming months. (Read: How are universities coping with the impacts of COVID-19?)

Because of this, students are forced to study at home on their own to continue learning despite the pandemic. However, this is not an ideal set up to most students, especially those in high school or college, who learn better with guidance from a teacher or an expert from the said subject.

Free Online Courses

Fortunately, the Philippines’ leading expert on open and distance elearning, the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU), will be launching an Online Bridge Program for Math and Science courses. (Read: TESDA offers 68 free training courses amid extended Luzon lockdown)

Called “Kahandaan, Kasanayan, at Kaalaman,” the program will be a joint venture by the UPOU’s Faculty of Education (FEd) and the Ugnayan ng Pahinungod or the Oblation Corps. It will be free of charge and open to senior high school students, college freshmen, and other individuals who are interested in learning more about Math and Science.

The courses will be taught through the UPOU’s portal for online courses, UPOU MODeL, and will run from July until December 2020. The UPOU Online Bridge Program is a performance-enhancement tutorial program organized by the University every summer before the start of the first semester. It is held by the different constituent campuses of the University of the Philippines.
