Looking for guidance, protection? Here are three Guardian Angels to call on!

In a world where uncertainty and evil persist, it’s a relief to know that we don’t have to face these tough times alone. We have our Guardian Angels by our side!

Pope Francis, who believes in the presence and power of Guardian Angels, makes sure to remind us of them at every Feast of the Guardian Angels on October 2.

“The doctrine on angels is not fantasist. No, it’s reality,” said Pope Francis in his 2014 homily at the Vatican. “According to church tradition, we all have an angel with us, who protects us and helps us understand things. How often have we heard, ‘I should do this, I should not do this, that’s not right, be careful…’ So often! It is the voice of our traveling companion. No one journeys alone and no one should think that they are alone.”

Guardian Angels are assigned to protect and guide a particular person, group, kingdom, or country. When faced with a crisis, a decision to make, or a tense situation, simply whisper this comforting Catholic prayer to your Guardian Angel:

Angel of God, my guardian dear

To whom God’s love commits me here.

Ever this day be at my side

To light, to guard, to rule and guide

You can also turn to Archangels—angels of rank who are believed to be chief messengers. My Pope identifies the three mentioned in the Bible and what they can do for us in our times of need.

Archangel Michael

The protector of the Jews is mentioned thrice in the Book of Daniel, appearing to the prophet after a lengthy fasting. He is also mentioned in the Book of Revelation, in the epistle of Jude, and the first epistle to the Thessalonians.

Sporting armor and wielding a sword that he uses to overpower the Devil, Michael the Archangel is our defender against Satan. Call upon on him to protect you against temptation and evil with this prayer written by Pope Leo XIII in 1884 after God allowed him to listen to a conversation between the Lord and the Devil:

“St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.”

Archangel Gabriel

Saint Archangel Gabriel

Hebrew for “God is my strength,” Gabriel appeared to Zacharias to tell him that his barren wife Elizabeth was to be with child (who would grow up to be John the Baptist). Six months later, Gabriel delivered the same good news to Mary, in an event known as the Annunciation

This is the Archangel of childbirth and communications. Say this prayer to him to intercede for your special intentions:

“O blessed Archangel Gabriel, we beseech thee, do thou intercede for us at the throne of divine mercy in our present necessities, that as thou didst announce to Mary the mystery of the Incarnation, so through thy prayers and patronage in heaven we may obtain the benefits of the same, and sing the praise of God forever in the land of the living. Amen.”

Archangel Raphael

Saint Archangel Raphael

When Tobias journeys to Media to collect money for his father, he is accompanied by Azariah—the Archangel Raphael in disguise. Along the way, Raphael tells Tobias to catch a fish that nearly eats his foot, and remove its heart, liver, and gall bladder. He then convinces him to marry Sarah and to burn the fish’s organs on their wedding night. The fumes drive away the demon that was supposed to take Tobias’ life. Back home, the Archangel reveals his true identity after instructing Tobias to use the remainder of the fish to cure his father Tobit of blindness.

Raphael is a patron saint of travelers, happy meetings, and illness. Recite this prayer for these and other personal intentions:

Glorious Archangel St. Raphael, great prince of the heavenly court, you are illustrious for your gifts of wisdom and grace. You are a guide of those who journey by land or sea or air, consoler of the afflicted, and refuge of sinners. I beg you, assist me in all my needs and in all the sufferings of this life, as once you helped the young Tobias on his travels. Because you are the ‘medicine of God’ I humbly pray you to heal the many infirmities of my soul and the ills that afflict my body. I especially ask of you the favor (mention your special intention here), and the great grace of purity to prepare me to be the temple of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
