Meet Jerdy, the 18yo Pinay Who Graduated Thanks to ‘Balut’

She shares the sacrifices of her Papa Rodolfo and how she plans to reciprocate his hard work.

When Jerdy Grace Araneta sat for her senior high school graduation portrait, the Siniloan, Laguna, student was the only one in her class to pose with a parent— in her case, her father, balut vendor Rodolfo.

(Read: Student Achiever with Cleft Palate Has This Advice for Fellow Graduates)

Apparently, selling balut didn’t just get Rodolfo a spot in his eldest daughter’s grad portrait, it was also instrumental to her achievement. “Dahil sa balut, diploma ay naabot,” was the sign Jerdy and her Papa Rodolfo held up to the camera with pride.

Days after her father-daughter photo went viral, My Pope Philippines caught up with Jerdy by phone. She talks about the challenges that her Papa Rodolfo went through so she could graduate, and how she plans to reciprocate.

Besides selling balut, how else does your papa make a living?

[He also repairs appliances, one of the side jobs he picked up during the pandemic.] (Read: Meet Pia Ocampo, A Diver Who Helps Turn Ocean Plastic Into School Chairs)

What is your Papa Rodolfo like?

Masipag. (Read: 3 Compelling Documentaries About the Lives of Pinoy Workers)

Even if your papa supported you, did you go through struggles?

Umutang din si Papa para sa gadget na ito [the cellphone she was using to take this call].

What would you tell students whose parents sacrificed a lot for their education?

When you have a stable income, what would you like to buy for your papa?

(Read: Millennial Farmer Shares Wise Words About Farming and Chasing Dreams)
