If you’re a fan of animé and Japanese animated movies, you would have definitely seen at least one Studio Ghibli movie (or maybe even all of them). For sure, you would have noticed the many dishes they feature in the films which all look super good— admit it, you might have even craved them at some point!
It might be because of how good the animated food looks, or how the characters enjoy it so much that we want to try it for ourselves. The food looks so delicious that if it were real life, the restaurant serving it would probably be at full capacity, with many more still waiting in line! Amazing Animator and Cook
The answer lies in the co-founder of Studio Ghibli itself, Hayao Miyazaki. During a question-and-answer session on Twitter, a fan asked the question we’ve all wanted an answer to: “Why is it that all the food that appears in Studio Ghibli movies always looks so delicious?”
The answer? Every dish that has ever appeared in any of the Studio Ghibli films has actually been made in real life by Hayao Miyazaki himself! So not only is the 80-year-old a great animator and director, but also an amazing cook. (Read: 3 Online Stores That Deliver Sushi Straight to Your Doorstep)
A Staple in Films
Because food has become a staple in Studio Ghibli’s movies, they even held an exhibition back in 2017 just to feature all the food they’ve put in the films! The exhibit also shows visitors how eating scenes are drawn and animated.
“Delicious! Animating Memorable Meals” was what the exhibit was called, because “fans can recall deep impressions of food and scenes of eating in Studio Ghibli films.” (Read: Japan to Release 3,000 Anime Titles on YouTube by 2022)
“Studio Ghibli films are renowned for depicting daily life in great detail,” the studio said, “What often lingers in the memory of our viewers are scenes of food and meals.”
