The Diocese of Tarlac will soon have its first crowned Marian image after Pope Francis approved the canonical coronation of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de Capas.
The image is enshrined at the Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Church. The date for the canonical coronation is yet to be announced. (Read: Pope Francis Declares Oldest Church in QC as Minor Basilica)
Fr. Melvin Castro, the head of the Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, says the Vatican’s approval of the coronation only “affirms our faithful’s devotion to the Mater Dolorosa.”
Safe From the Pandemic
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Fr. Melvin says that the parish “prayed more fervently than ever to Our Lady.” (Read: 5 Standout Shrines of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary in the PH)
Taking advantage of technology, the parish campaigned for prayers, sacrifices, and held Eucharistic and Marian motorcades on a regular basis. “To this day our Parish has been spared from deaths caused by the pandemic,” Fr. Melvin said.
The canonical coronation of the Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de Capas will be a first in the Diocese of Tarlac’s 57-year history. However, the devotion to the Mater Doloras has been recorded to have started as early as 1923.
In 2018, the Marian image was honored with an episcopal coronation.
