Home Prayer of the Day Prayer To St. Peregrine, Patron of Cancer Patients

Prayer To St. Peregrine, Patron of Cancer Patients

If you need guidance, ask St. Peregrine, patron of cancer patients.

The diagnosis of cancer can be overwhelming not only for the patient but for their loved ones. It can affect one’s physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

In times like this, people turn to prayer to help cope with the challenges from the caner diagnosis. It can be silent or spoken out loud and can be done anywhere– in your car, inside the church, in your home, or anywhere you feel most connected to God. Who is St. Peregrine?

If you need guidance, ask St. Peregrine, patron of cancer patients. Born in Forli, Italy, Peregrine Laziosi is the only son of rich parents. He was once an enemy of the Pope and a rebel. But after witnessing the graciousness of God through Philip Benizi, Peregrine converted and became a member of the Order of the Servites.

A few years later, he opened a Servite monastery in his hometown. During that time, a cancerous growth appeared on his right foot. It was so painful that he agreed with the surgeon’s suggestion to amputate the foot.

It was so painful that he finally agreed with the surgeon who wanted to amputate. But on the night before his surgery, Peregrine dreamt that Christ was touching him and healing his foot. He woke up and saw that his foot was completely healed. From then on, he was sought by the sick to intercede in their illnesses. The Church has since appointed him as patron of persons with cancer, foot ailments, or any incurable disease. (Read: Prayer for People With Disabilities)

Here is a prayer to St. Peregrine for cancer patients.

Prayer To St. Peregrine, Patron of Cancer Patients

Glorious wonder-worker, St. Peregrine,
You answered the divine call
With a ready spirit,
And forsook all the comforts of the world
To dedicate yourself to God
In the Order of His Most Holy Mother.

You labored manfully
For the salvation of souls;
And in union with Jesus Crucified
You endured the most painful sufferings
With such patience
As to deserve to be
Healed miraculously
Of an incurable cancer
In your leg by a touch
Of his divine hand.

Obtain for me
The grace to answer
Every call of God
And to fulfill His Will
In all the events of life.

Enkindle in my heart
A consuming zeal
For the salvation of souls;
Deliver me from the infirmities
that afflict my body

(State your intention(s) here)

Obtain for me
Perfect resignation to the sufferings
It may please God to send me,
So that, imitating our Crucified Savior
And His Sorrowful Mother,
I may merit eternal glory in heaven. Amen.

St. Peregrine, pray for me
And for all who invoke your aid.
