Every month, Pope Francis calls on the faithful to pray for a specific intention. Called “monthly prayer intentions,” these topics are usually based on the outcry of those who have been reaching out to the Vatican for intercession and guidance.
For this month of September 2020, Pope Francis asks us to join him in prayer for the planet’s resources. This means that for the whole month, we are called upon to reach out to God and pray that the planet’s resources will not be plundered, but shared in a just and respectful manner.
A known advocate for the love and care of planet Earth, Lolo Kiko has been active throughout his papacy in supporting initiatives for environmental protection. In fact, one of his most notable works is the Laudato Si’—an encyclical that he wrote in 2015. In it, the Pope tackles the importance of caring for our common home and the need to address issues concerning the environment, such as irresponsible development and global warming. This month, let us join Pope Francis in his prayer intention and do our part in saving our planet’s natural resources. Here’s a prayer from Lolo Kiko’s Laudato Si’ to help you start right!
A Prayer for Our Environment from the Pope’s Laudato Si’
All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures. You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.
Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one.
O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes. Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction.
Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth. Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey towards your infinite light.
We thank you for being with us each day. Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love, and peace. Amen.
