Robert Downey, Jr. is making his Tony Stark persona come into life––by rescuing Mother Earth!
The Iron Man star has recently announced his plans to launch a groundbreaking organization that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to save the planet.
The organization, called Footprint Coalition, makes use of robotics, artificial intelligence, and technology to clean up the Earth and reverse its carbon footprint within a span of ten years.
On Tuesday, June 4, Downey made the announcement in front of thousands of online retailers, AI scientists, tech companies, and dignitaries––all of whom are participants at the Amazon’s Machine Learning, Automation, Robotics and Space (re:MARS) technology conference where Downey was invited to serve as a keynote speaker.
In his speech, Downey talked about his infamous past, and related it to how his Marvel character, Tony Stark, evolved through the years.
According to Downey, he could personally relate to Stark’s growth from a “soulless war profiteer to a man who was willing to sacrifice himself for the good of the community.” He says it is the sort of transformation that he is undergoing himself.
Downey previously battled drug addiction and was given a second chance at his career after he landed the role of Iron Man. His 11-year career with the Marvel Cinematic Universe turned Downey into one of the most bankable and highly paid actors in show business––helping him land the lead roles in numerous blockbuster films year after year.
A Chance to Give Back
Thankful for the blessings he’s received, Downey is now seeking ways to give back to the community––which is why, when he was offered an opportunity to become part of an organization that aims to save the planet, the actor was more than willing to dedicate the next 11 years of his life to the cause.
“I know it’s a kumbaya-type dream,” Downey said in his speech. “I’m down with dedicating myself to maybe one small part of making good on that statement, even in abject failure, it’s still the best idea I’ve ever had.”
As expected, Downey’s speech was met with applause from the crowd. And while the actor acknowledges that he isn’t an expert in the field, he says he hopes to use his connections and influence to help scientists get the support they need.
Way to go, Robert Downey, Jr! We are already looking forward to the official launch of the Footprint Coalition on April 2020!
