WATCH: Richard Poon, Maricar Reyes Talk Love, Money, Jealousy

The celebrity couple addresses three hotly debated topics among lovers.

If the chemistry between crooner Richard Poon and actress Maricar Reyes in the music video for his rendition of the love song “You and I” was so palpable, it’s because the two were attracted to each other from the get-go. But they kept it to themselves— “restraint” is the word they both used in an interview— until they could no longer hide their feelings.

On June 9, 2013, the two exchanged vows in a Christian wedding before close family and friends. So chaste was their courtship that when it was time to kiss as man and wife, Maricar and Richard locked lips for the very first time. (Read: A Prayer to St. Agnes for Chastity)

Today, they are the poster couple for lovers seeking advice on relationship-related matters. “Like many, we’ve had our share of clueless stumbles, from which we’ve learned priceless lessons,” writes Maricar in their website relationshipmatters.ph.  “Some of you will make better changes EARLIER IN LIFE than us,” adds Richard. “May your life-change be the greatest tool to serve many, many others.”

Couples looking for answers to three of the most hotly debated topics might find them in Richard and Maricar’s vlogs. Read below as My Pope Philippines lists them down for you!

On Love: Dapat bang mas mahal ng lalaki ang babae?

The couple says yes. “Totoo ‘yung sinasabi nila,” says Richard of this piece of advice given to him by older, wiser couples. “Kasi ang lalaki ‘pag hindi niya masyadong mahal si girl, konting away lang, konting tampuhan…magsasawa na, maghahanap din ng iba. ‘Yung lalaki madaling mag-shift.” (Read: 3 Life Lessons We Can Learn From Fr. On Money: Who should manage the finances?

Some say it’s the man (who earns it), others say it’s the woman (who runs the household). But Richard and Maricar agree that it’s the one who’s good at handling money— and in their case, it’s Richard. “Meron akong nakitang examples na ang wife ang waldas,” he says in the vlog. “Or ‘yung husband maluho.” (Read: 5 Ways to Manage Your Finances Amid COVID-19)

To avoid fighting about money, set ground rules early, they say. One: Agree on who is better with money. Two: Work on a budget and stick to it. Three: List down your expenses. Four: Single people, do not get into a joint account with a partner until you’re married!

On Jealousy: Do you still get jealous even when you’re married?

“Yes,” says Maricar in this 2018 vlog. Apparently, the Poons have a rule that if someone has a crush on somebody, they tell their spouse. “It helps us guard each other,” she says. “Everybody gets jealous at one point or another in their relationship. What matters is how you handle it. Magiging truthful ba kayo sa isa’t isa?
