You would often hear from foreigners that they love the Philippines because of the Filipinos. They say that the hospitality, the welcoming demeanor, and the smiles of the people around the country are what make them come back time and time again to visit. Not to mention the hundreds of comedians and stand-up comedians that people flock to comedy bars and event halls to watch!
Filipinos are indeed happy people, and they break into smiles even when the circumstances aren’t necessarily the smoothest of sails. They make light of situations through appropriate jokes, and laugh together with family and friends whenever they can. (Read: We asked grandparents: How do you attain genuine happiness?)
But did you know that humor and joy have a patron saint? It is St. Philip Neri and he celebrates his feast day today! Here is a prayer to ask for his intercession:
Prayer to St. Philip Neri
O holy St. Philip Neri, patron saint of joy, you who trusted Scripture’s promise that the Lord is always at hand and that we need not have anxiety about anything, in your compassion heal our worries and sorrows and lift the burdens from our hearts.
We come to you as one whose heart swells with abundant love for God and all creation. Hear us, we pray, especially in this need (make your request here). Keep us safe through your loving intercession, and may the joy of the Holy Spirit which filled your heart.
St. Philip, transform our lives and bring us peace. Amen.
