If there’s one powerful person in the world who is known and admired for his simplicity, it would be no other than Pope Francis himself. He is the head of the Catholic Church, but opts to live simply and sustainably. It’s also the main reason why he chose Francis as his name, as his namesake saint preferred to serve the poor and be charitable all the days of his life.
St. Magdalene of Canossa lived exactly how the two Francises do and did. She spent her entire life collaborating with humanitarians to promote her cause of serving and providing the needs of the poor. (Read: The Pope’s Charity Chronicles)
Using her inheritance, St. Magdalene even began charitable work for the poor and the sick. This eventually led her to the founding of two Canossian Orders: Canossian Daughters of Charity, Servants of the Poor, and the Canossian Sons of Charity.
Join us in praying to this charitable saint on her feast day today, with this prayer to St. Magdalene of Canossa.
Prayer to St. Magdalene of Canossa
O God, Father of goodness,
you revealed your love to the humble and to the children,
by raising in your Church, St. Magdalene of Canossa to be the servant of the poor,
grant that we may seek you above all things and serve the poor
and the little ones in a true spirit of charity and humility.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
St. Magdalene of Canossa, pray for us.
