1 in 14 Filipino adults. 3.9 million Filipinos. 463 million individuals globally.
What are these statistics, you ask? These are the numbers that represent people who are living with diabetes. Yes, almost half a billion individuals are inflicted with this chronic illness that can sometimes be life-threatening. And almost four million of them are Filipinos.
It is indeed hard to live with a chronic illness such as diabetes— you have to watch what you’re eating, drink maintenance medicines that make a dent in your bank account, and constantly monitor your health and go to checkups. It isn’t only a physical and financial challenge to be inflicted with a chronic illness, it is also a mental and emotional challenge not only to the patient but also to their loved ones. When the going gets tough and can’t be solved purely through science, many diabetes patients and their loved ones turn to prayer. They seek refuge in the Lord and all saints who can help them, especially St. Josemaria Escriva, the patron saint of diabetes.
So for today, St. Josemaria Escriva’s feast day, let us recite a prayer to ask for his intercession. Let us pray that he be able to help all those with diabetes, and their respective families and friends.
A Prayer to St. Josemaria Escriva
through the mediation of Mary our Mother,
you granted your priest Saint Josemaria countless graces,
choosing him as a most faithful instrument to found Opus Dei,
a way of sanctification in daily work and in the fulfillment
of the Christian’s ordinary duties.
Grant that I too may learn to turn all the circumstances
and events of my life into occasions of loving you
and serving the Church, the Pope and all souls
with joy and simplicity, lighting up the pathways
of this earth with faith and love.
Deign to grant me, through the intercession of Saint Josemaria,
the favor of (make your request).
