Preparing for an upcoming examination can sometimes become nerve-wracking. Especially if it is for a licensure or a final exam.
Many things might hinder students or exam takers from studying well– the environment, the lack of resources, or many distractions. So to fight these, praying that God will grant you the courage, wisdom, and will to study and pass the exam is a sure-fire way to have the confidence to ace that test.
And when we talk about examinations, two saints come to mind: St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Joseph of Cupertino. While many students pray to St. Thomas Aquinas, the patron saint of students, to guide them during their exams, many forget to call on St. Joseph of Cupertino, who is the opposite of the very intelligent St. Thomas. (Read: Prayer Before Study by St. Thomas Aquinas)
St. Joseph of Cupertino was a holy man and very devoted to prayer. However, he often had trouble in his studies. Not only was he a slow-learner, he was often absent-minded as well! He struggled in seminary education but during his final exam, his examiner is said to have only asked him questions he knew the answers to. This allowed him to pass and go on to ordination.
Whether you need guidance from St. Thomas Aquinas or St. Joseph of Cupertino, the power of prayer really helps. Here are prayers for the two beloved saints for you to pass your exams.
Prayer to St. Thomas Aquinas Before Exams
Ineffable Creator, Who out of the treasures of Thy wisdom has appointed three hierarchies of Angels and set them in admirable order high above the heavens and has disposed the diverse portions of the universe in such marvelous array, Thou Who art called the True Source of Light and supereminent Principle of Wisdom, be pleased to cast a beam of Thy radiance upon the darkness of my mind and dispel from me the double darkness of sin and ignorance in which I have been born.
Thou Who makes eloquent the tongues of little children, fashion my words and pour upon my lips the grace of Thy benediction. Grant me penetration to understand, capacity to retain, method and facility in study, subtlety in interpretation and abundant grace of expression.
Order the beginning, direct the progress and perfect the achievement of my work, Thou Who art true God and true Man and livest and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.
Prayer to St. Joseph of Cupertino Before Exams
O St. Joseph of Cupertino, who by your prayer obtained from God to be asked at your examination the only preposition you knew. Grant that I may like you succeed in the [name of the class] examination. In return I promise to make you known and cause you to be invoked.
