On this day in 1953, Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay made history. They became the first two people to reach the highest point on Earth— the summit of Mount Everest in Nepal. Climbing over 29,000 feet above sea level, the pair conquered their mission at 11:30AM of May 29, 1953, after a gruelling seven weeks of climbing!
It’s definitely an entirely different view and achievement when you get to stand on the top of the tallest mountain in the entire world— imagine, you are quite literally on top of the world. But it’s no joke to ascend such heights with thin air, gravity, and fatigue all against you. (Read: Our Mountains Need Saving – Here’s How Your Parish Can Help!)
In fact, the journey to the top of Everest can even be deadly. An estimated 300 individuals have died while ascending the mountain, wherein around half of them buried under the snow until now.
So in honor of all the lives lost in the hundreds of attempts to climb Mount Everest, we offer this prayer of protection for mountain climbers who continue to do the impossible.
A Prayer for the Safety of Mountain Climbers
Lord Jesus Christ, bless us today with your guidance and protection that No wild beast may attack us, no tree fall upon us, no water rise against us, no fire burn us, no witchcraft or enchantment can harm us.
Bless us to be strong and understanding, to be compassionate and kind, to be friendly and trustworthy, to set a good example to others, to think for the greater good and of ourselves the least.
May this journey teach us your wisdom. Knowing with you, I can do all things. So Jesus, climb with me, Amen.
