This July, Pope Francis invites us to pray for the integrity of justice

The phrase “justice is blind” refers to Lady Justice, aka Iustitia, the goddess of justice in Roman mythology. A symbol of the ideals of the legal system—objective, impartial, “without passion or prejudice”—she is dressed in a toga, wears a blindfold, and carries a weighing scale and sword. The former balances the merits of both parties in a case, the latter represents authority and the swiftness and finality of a decision made.

But justice can be blind to what is true and fair too, especially when money, power, and influence are involved.

This is why Pope Francis dedicated his prayer intention for the month of July to “The Integrity of Justice.” Every year, Lolo Kiko assigns a specific intention for each of the 12 months, and invites us to pray with him and include the intentions in our own prayers. These intentions are entrusted to The Worldwide Prayer Network, an organization that encourages the faithful to join the Holy Father in prayer. In 2019, our dear Pope Francis has called on us to pray for young people and the example of Mary (January), human trafficking (February), recognition of the right of Christian communities (March), doctors and their collaborators in war zones (April), the Church in Africa, a seed of unity (May), and the mode of life of priests (June).

For the integrity of justice, it is the Santo Papa’s hope “that those who administer justice may work with integrity, and that the injustice which prevails in the world may not have the last word.”

It is an intention whose consequences affect us all. “Where there is no justice, there is no peace!” said Pope Francis in his audience with children on May 12, 2015.

The Holy Pontiff’s prayer intentions for the rest of the year are families, schools of human growth (August), the protection of the oceans (September), a missionary “spring” in the Church (October), dialogue and reconciliation in the Near East (November), and the future of the very young (December).
