Pope Francis has declared on Sunday, March 21, that the La Purisima Concepcion Parish Church in Bulacan province is now a minor basilica.
The Diocese of Malolos announced on Sunday evening that the Pope has elevated the Marian Church into a minor basilica status. Bishop Dennis Villarojo of Malolos made the announcement himself via video message to the parishioners.
“This designation is Holy Father Pope Francis’ unique recognition of your strong faith especially in this time of pandemic,” Villarojo said. (Read: Bataan Parish Dedicated to St. John Paul II Now a Diocesan Shrine)
“It also proves the unique bond between the church in Rome and the Holy Father in our parish,” he added.
La Purisima Concepcion Parish
The La Purisima Concepcion Parish is a church that is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is located in the town of Sta. Maria, Bulacan, and is under the management of the Diocese of Malolos. (Read: Wow, Bulacan’s Obando Church Is Now a National Shrine!)
Founded by the Franciscan missionaries in the year 1792, the church is home to the revered image of La Purisima Concepcion de Santa Maria, which received canonical coronation on February 1, 2020. This is also the reason why the parish is considered as one of the Malolos Diocese’s most unique Marian churches.
Under the Diocese of Malolos, the La Purisima Concepcion Parish is the second church to be elevated into a minor basilica status (the first was the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception or the Malolos Cathedral).
In the Philippines, meanwhile, the parish is the 18th church to be declared as a minor basilica.
