Pia Wurtzbach Calls on Voters to Register as Pemberton Gets Absolute Pardon

"Hindi na sapat na sa social media lang tayo naririnig. Our voices need to be heard through our votes.”

When the news broke about the decision of President Duterte to grant absolute pardon to US Marine Lance Corporal Joseph Scott Pemberton, Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach took to Twitter to express her dismay and disapproval. It can be recalled that Pemberton was jailed for the murder of Filipina transgender Jennifer Laude in 2014.

The Beauty Queen also retweeted several Twitter posts with the hashtag, #TransLivesMatter to reiterate the importance of equality in terms of justice and rights for the transgender community. “Trans rights are human rights. PERIOD!” she emphasized in a tweet. (Read: Murder Case Timeline: The Jennifer Laude 2014 Slay )

Wurtzbach has always been a vocal supporter for LGBTQIA+ community. In fact, just recently during the 2020 pride month celebrations, she urged the public to accept transgender women as women in an Instagram post.

Let Your Voice Be Heard

In light of her—and the general public’s—dismay over Duterte’s decision to pardon Pemberton, Wurtzbach has urged her fellow Filipinos to register and vote for the 2022 elections. (Read: COMELEC Releases Guidelines for Voters’ Registration)

“Tuwing nagbabasa ako ng balita, palagi nalang palala ng palala yung mga nababasa ko. Ngayon ito naman? Hay … Eto nalang, let’s all make sure we register to vote for the next elections. Each one of us,” Wurtzbach wrote on Twitter.

The UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador for Asia and the Pacific also shared some useful tips on how to register for the upcoming elections, saying that it is not enough to voice out our sentiments on social media—our votes are still the best way to let our voices be heard.
