In a time when stress and anxiety are rampant especially for students and employees, sleep may seem to be non-existent. And ironically, it is also in these times that we need to get as much sleep and rest as we can, as these can help strengthen our immune system to fight off deadly viruses.
This dilemma is what motivated PepsiCo (the merger company of Pepsi-Cola and Frito-Lay) to launch their very own product that promotes relaxation and calmness. The drink, called “Driftwell,” contains L-theanine (an amino acid that can be found in tea leaves). It is based on the trending “functional water” that wellness circles use nowadays as a supplement to promote calmness, improve focus, and aid in sleep. Emily Silver, PepsiCo Vice President for Innovation, says the product is an opportunity to help lessen stress and anxiety during these difficult times. “We certainly see a massive need in this functional space,” she states.
DriftWell is a functional water that was developed through a product pitch competition among PepsiCo employees, The Next Big Idea. PepsiCo President and CEO Ramon Laguarta was at the forefront of the competition which made it easier to have a new product in less than a year. It is deemed a great innovation as functional water is becoming a “growing category in the beverage industry” over the years.
According to reports, DriftWell will be available in two flavors—blackberry and lavender, both of which encourage relaxation. It will be officially launched by December and will be available for online orders by then. Supermarkets and stores will have the drink on their shelves as early as next year, 2021.
