Meet the new Apostolic Administrator of Manila, Bishop Broderick Pabillo

With Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle’s appointment as the new prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples in the Vatican, the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Manila is now in the good hands of Bishop Broderick Pabillo. Pope Francis himself appointed Fr. Broderick S. Pabillo, Auxiliary Bishop of Manila, as the new Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Manila on February 10, 2020.

Pabillo will take on the new role until a new archbishop of Manila is inaugurated, according to the circular signed by Chancellor Fr. Reginald R. Malicdem, the Cardinal’s personal secretary and rector of the Manila Cathedral.

“He (Pabillo) will be mentioned in all Masses at the Eucharistic Prayer and ‘Broderick our Administrator,’” the Manila Cathedral announced on its Facebook page.

 New Voice of the Church

“The Church should not interfere in politics since the Constitution provides for the separation of Church and state.” This is usually what every critic says every time bishops, priests, and religious sectors denounce extrajudicial killings and human rights abuses. But with the new Apostolic Administrator of Manila, it seems like the voice of the church and its people will be much louder.

For years, Pabillo has spoken about various societal issues and has never shied away at voicing out his opinions and calling on the Church and citizens to become aware and stand up against abuses. In an interview with Rappler during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity last 2019, Bishop Broderick Pabillo expressed his call for everyone to take part and stand together.

Napupukawan na ‘yung tao na kailangan na nating manindigan. Hindi na tayo tatahimik at hindi lang manindigan kundi sama-sama tayong manindigan (People are becoming aware that we have to make a stand. We will no longer be silent and we will make a stand together),” Pabillo said.
