The issue between the Philippines and China regarding the West Philippine Sea (WPS) has been around for quite some time. It has gotten very serious that Filipinos even filed (and won) an arbitration case at the International Courts to reject China’s claim that they own the disputed waters included in the Philippines’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) back in 2016.
Over the years, many advocates for the West Philippine Sea have been raising awareness on the WPS non-stop. Retired Supreme Court (SC) Justice Antonio Carpio even wrote a book about the longstanding dispute, and has recently launched a signature campaign for President Rodrigo Duterte to retract his statements on the WPS.
Now, even social media influencers are using their reach and influence to raise awareness about this issue. (Read: Timeline: The West Philippine Sea Dispute Against China)
‘West Philippine Sale’
Macoy Averilla, also known as Macoy Dubs and Aunt Julie, will be collaborating with We The Pvblic for a live selling event on Facebook called ‘West Philippine Sale’ on June 12, Independence Day. (Read: West Philippine Sea: DFA Files Diplomatic Protests Against China)
The influencer, who rose to fame through his dubs of famous movie and series scenes, will be hosting the hour-long event. The goal of the event is to raise awareness about the WPS dispute and claim what is rightfully ours, in the form of a satirical ‘live selling.’
To explain, live selling is an event on Facebook where sellers are going live to show off their products to their customers. Interested buyers will simply have to comment ‘MINE’ on the stream to be able to reserve the item.
The same idea goes for the West Philippine Sale, but instead of reserving clothes or shoes, viewers will be claiming on the West Philippine Sea. Everyone who will be commenting ‘MINE’ during the stream will be receiving a “confirmation message” that they have reserved WPS.
Interested individuals may click this link on June 12, Saturday, at 6 pm to enter the live stream.
