Today, two prominent women are celebrating their second pandemic birthday (just like many of us). Vice President Leni Robredo and actress Angel Locsin were born 20 years apart, in 1965 and 1985, respectively on this day.
Coincidentally, Leni and Angel have also been at the forefront of the COVID-19 response in the country— having started various initiatives throughout the year-long quarantine. As such, both women are being deemed “COVID-19 heroes” for the efforts they’ve made during this global health crisis. (Read: Caritas PH Condemns Duterte for Lifting the Mining Ban)
In honor of their 56th and 36th birthdays, My Pope Philippines lists some of the numerous initiatives and projects Leni and Angel have done since March 2020. Read below!
COVID Heroes: Leni Robredo
Throughout her term as Vice President of the Philippines, Leni has faced numerous controversies thrown her way. Just last year, she was accused of competing with President Rodrigo Duterte during the wake of Typhoons Rolly and Ulysses, and was also told to “just shut up” when she asked the government to review the CoronaVac vaccine before administering it to the public.
Amid all these, VP Leni put all issues against her aside so she could help with the country’s COVID-19 response. For those who lost work because of the pandemic, her office partnered with hundreds of companies to launch Sikap.ph, a free-for-all platform for anyone looking for a job during these times. The Office of the Vice President (OVP) also partnered with USAID to provide technical-vocational skills to out-of-school youth for free.
And just recently, VP Leni’s office launched the Bayanihan E-Konsulta Facebook page where anyone can book a free consultation with healthcare experts. Volunteer doctors are part of this initiative, which has now catered to thousands of Filipinos who aren’t able to visit hospitals due to overcrowding of COVID-19 patients.
COVID Heroes: Angel Locsin
True to her iconic role, Angel Locsin is a real-life Darna. Just recently, she and her fiancé Neil Arce donated P1 million to Baguio City to assist in the city’s COVID-19 vaccination program. And through her and Anne Curtis’s initiative Shop & Share, she was also able to donate the same amount to Pasig City, City of Manila, Taguig City, Quezon City, and Philippine Red Cross.
Last year, at the height of the chaos brought about by the pandemic, Angel was able to raise a whopping P11.35 million in just 19 days through her #UniTentWeStandPH initiative. The amount was used to provide over 200 isolation and sanitation tents for various hospitals in the country.
And for her birthday today, Angel decided to celebrate it by giving back to the community— as she has for the last year. She announced that instead of celebrating her birthday quietly, she will be opening her own community pantry in Quezon City. The initiative was inspired by the community pantries that have sprouted across the nation in the last week.
“Bilang pagpupugay sa bayanihan ng mga Pilipino at sa mga nagtayo ng mga community pantries sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng bansa natin, I decided to celebrate my birthday tomorrow by putting up a community pantry here,” the actress said.
Happy birthday, VP Leni and Angel Locsin! We at My Pope Philippines are one with your mission to share joy and positivity with every Filipino.
