5 K-Pop Fans Share Why They Support Korean Artists

How is it really like to be a fan of Korean idols? We went and asked K-pop fans themselves!

In the past years, we’ve seen a dramatic rise in the popularity of hallyu or the Korean Wave. The release of new Korean dramas, usually called K-dramas, has become a highly anticipated ‘event,’ and has somewhat become many people’s new obsession.

But if there’s one thing that’s become even more popular than K-drama, it is K-pop. For those of you who might not know, K-pop is the Korean music scene, featuring both solo and group artists or ‘idols’. Now, these idols are now taking the world by storm— even featuring western artists on their tracks and performing on US shows! (Read: 4 Food Trends to Expect This Year, According to Experts)

Indeed, fans couldn’t help but be proud of all the achievements and recognitions their idols are attaining. But the idols themselves say that they would be nowhere if not for their fans. So how is it really like to be a fan of Korean artists? We went and asked proud K-pop fans Bluette Fernandez, Vee Dayandayan, Joyce Rojas, Benice Battreal, Yazmine Yacub, and Rina Seguin!

Who influenced you to try listening to K-pop?
My sister brought me to K-pop as we usually have the same taste in music. Before I was a fan of K-pop, I was a fan of K-dramas. Now, I’ve been a K-pop fan for almost 4 years nonstop. (Read: 5 Easy Korean Meals for Work Week Lunches)

Who was the first idol you became a fan of?
The first idol I became interested in was Choi Minho of Shinee. But the first group I officially became a fan of was B1A4. Now, I support a lot of groups but mainly focus on Exo, Seventeen, NCT, GOT7, ONEUS, Stray Kids, AB6IX, CIX, and Golden Child.

Why do you love and support them?
I love and support them is because I know how much sweat and passion they put into their music and somehow, even with the language barrier, they always feel connected with their fans.

How have these idols impacted your life?
For me, idols are my inspiration— people I could look up to. Having seen them achieve their dreams and do the things they love to do motivates me to do well in life until I achieve my dreams like them.

Who influenced you to try listening to K-pop?
My daughter, who is a fan of Seventeen, influenced me to listen to their music. I’ve grown to love their kind of music, and now listening to their songs relaxes me and takes away stress, especially those caused by work. I’ve been a fan since 2018.

Many people wonder why you love K-pop  when “you don’t even understand them.” What do you usually tell these people?
Aside from loving their music and enjoying their performances, I am amazed at their dedication to their craft, and how much work they put in to succeed in their field. They also serve as role models to their fans. I support them because I want to see them succeed. Seventeen and D.O of Exo were the first idols I supported and still do up to this day. How have these idols impacted your life?
They are my way of connecting with younger people— my daughter especially. They provide me opportunities to spend meaningful time with my daughter and enjoy doing things together despite the difference in our age.

What made you become a fan of K-pop?
Back in high school, I had some friends who were already into K-pop! It was also during the time 2NE1 started to become more popular here, as some of their songs were often played on the radio and I’d listen to them every morning on the way to school. I think it was the diversity of their fashion and the uniqueness of their music that made me a fan.

Many people wonder why you love K-pop  when “you don’t even understand them.” What do you usually tell these people?
I personally stand by the belief that there is always more to admiring and supporting artists than just understanding or having the same language. I love and support my artists because of their music and the meanings behind their songs! They carefully curate and produce content that would resonate with their audience, and at the same time showcase the uniqueness of their charms and talents.

Who was the first idol you became a fan of?
Big Bang and 2NE1 were the first Kpop groups I followed, and eventually, I got into Exo which was probably the first group I fully committed to when they debuted in 2012. But my focus right now is on Ateez. (Read: 4 Korean Love Teams Who Became Real-Life Couples)

When did you become a fan of K-pop?
I think it was the time when people were fawning over Yoona of SNSD that I became curious about who she was. And when I listened to their music, I just couldn’t get over it even if I didn’t understand it. The choreography is very catchy, too! (Read: The Cast of ‘Stairway to Heaven,’ Where Are They Now?)

I became a fan because of their aesthetics, their refreshing and uniques beats, and awesome choreographies. The visual of the group is a plus! I’ve been a fan since third-year high school (around 2012 or 2013).

Why do you love and support K-pop artists?
I love and support them because of their art. Their performance, stage, and overall aesthetics will make you feel emotions, and it gets through even with the language barrier. Of course, we also stan them because of their talents, but a plus for me is maybe how vocal they are with issues surrounding them. My first love is SNSD, but now I have a long list including BTS, Seventeen, Twice, IU, Jackson Wang, Blackpink, and more.

How have these idols impacted your life?
As an idol, they have really inspired me with my personal craft and their music has brought me healing. I don’t want to put so much weight on them because I don’t know if they’d want that, baka ma-pressure lang sila, eh tao lang din naman sila who do their job.

What influenced you to try listening to K-pop?
I watched She Was Pretty and I found myself super attracted to Siwon (of Super Junior). At the time, I also had a friend who kept sending me Siwon pictures. They reminded me of another group that I really loved. I’ve been a fan since late November 2020!

Why do you love and support K-pope artists?
They remind me so much of One Direction with their chaotic nature on and off stage, and their personalities when they’re on variety shows are super fun to watch. There are subtitles and English translations naman, eh. Super Junior was the first idol I became a fan of. (Read: Here’s Where to Get Korean Snacks for Your Next K-Drama Binge)

How have these idols impacted your life?
Honestly, I feel like they got me out of my burned-out stage. I started listening to them after the flood (Typhoon Ulysses) and I feel like they motivated me so much to go on even when I felt like I was losing so much energy already.
