A Joan of Arc comic book series is coming and we’re all ready for it!

The story of Joan of Arc has been retold a thousand times, but people are still finding new ways to introduce the sword-wielding teenage heroine to the world.

Known to many due to the numerous films, paintings, and film adaptations of her life, Joan of Arc is one of the most popular French saints along with St. Thérèse of Lisieux. As a young girl, Joan was captured and tried for heresy and witchcraft, which eventually led to her death. But before that, The Maiden, as she called herself, inspired the French in battle during the Hundred Years’ War. Joan, 16 years old at that time, rode the battle lines wearing white armor and wielding a sword and a flag, and rallied the French troops as they fought England for territory. Due to her boldness and determination, she was able to put Charles VII to the throne.

The first issue of the comic book, The Mission of Joan of Arc, to be published by Voyage Comics and Publishing, focuses on the historical battle of Orleans from Joan’s perspective. During the research phase for the comic, Philip Kosloski, founder of Voyage Comics and Publishing, and his team of comic book artists came upon the stories of the teenager’s visions and how St. Michael the Archangel was always a prominent figure. According to retellings, St. Michael and St. Catherine of Alexandria were among the voices heard by Joan of Arc when she was 13 years old. The comic book explores these “visions” and makes St. Michael visible to Joan.

St. Michael is a central character in Kosloki’s work. The archangel is the supreme commander of God’s armies—fitting to be of aid to the girl who is fighting a war. With the angel’s help, Joan and her troops are able to reclaim Orleans and other French towns invaded by the English.
