ICYMI: Inday Sara Duterte Withdraws From Mayoral Race, Brother To Substitute

No announcements have been made regarding her plans for the 2022 elections.

In a Facebook post made on Tuesday, November 9, Davao City mayor and presidential daughter Sara “Inday Sara” Duterte-Carpio announced that she has withdrawn her candidacy for mayor. Attaching photos of her dropping by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) office in their province, Inday Sara wrote, “Ngayong hapon wini-withdraw ko ang aking kandidatura sa pagka-Mayor ng Davao City.”

The presidential daughter added that with her withdrawal from the mayoral bid, her younger brother Sebastian “Baste” Duterte–who currently sits as the Vice Mayor of Davao City–will be replacing her as mayoral candidate. “Si VM Baste ang papalit sa akin. Ito lamang po muna,” Duterte-Carpio said. (Read: ‘Lalaban Ako, Lalaban Tayo’: VP Leni Robredo To Run For President In 2022 Elections)

Melchor Quitain Jr. will be substituting for the vice mayoral position in place of Baste.

‘Not expected’

According to Quitain Jr., Inday Sara’s withdrawal was “not expected” and he only found out that he would be running for vice mayor “very recently”. However, despite it being unexpected by allies, the withdrawal isn’t entirely a surprise to many, especially since early presidential preference surveys had Inday Sara in the lead.

While Duterte-Carpio has not disclosed what her plans are after the withdrawal, reports say that she had met with two presidential candidates in the past few weeks. She was reported to have met with Bongbong Marcos Jr. and Ronald ‘Bato’ Dela Rosa back in October on two separate occasions. Bato Dela Rosa is the standard bearer of the PDP-Laban faction of Energy Secretary Afonso Cusi, supported by President Rodrigo Duterte. As of writing, no other statements have been made by Duterte-Carpio or her spokesperson Liloan Mayor Christina Frasco following the former’s withdrawal from the mayoral race.
