K-drama fans will be happy to know that starting October 23, they will have a new series to watch out for every Saturday and Sunday! The new show, called Jirisan, stars Gianna Jun or Jun Ji-hyun (My Love from the Star), Ju Ji-hoon (Kingdom), and Sung Dong-il (Reply 1988). It is directed by Lee Eung-bok (Descendants of the Sun, Guardian: The Lonely and Great God) and written by Kim Eun-hee (Kingdom, Signal).
The story centers in on Seo Yi-gang (Jun Ji-hyun), an experienced park ranger at Jirisan National Park in Jirisan–a mountain in South Korea. One day, she becomes the senior to junior park ranger Kang Hyun-jo (Ju Ji-hoon), an ex-lieutenant and military graduate. Hyun-jo was involved in an accident in Jirisan. The two then work together and are responsible for search and rescue in Jirisan–and along the way, unravel secrets of the mountain, and discover the mysteries that haunt the mountain.
A new role
Contrary to her roles as a superstar in My Love from the Star and a mermaid in The Legend of the Blue Sea, Ji-hyun’s role in Jirisan is new to her. “Actually, I didn’t accept the role because I wished to play a strong woman, females today are stronger in character,” the 39-year-old actress said in a press conference for the show. “I never thought I would play a park ranger, to me this is a brand new experience.”
Despite it being new to her, Ji-hyun said that she enjoyed filming the series. She says that she didn’t feel too tired or cold, and shared that she even prepared mountaineering gear for the role. The actress added that doing the show even improved her physical health due to the physically demanding nature of Jirisan. (Read: 3 Healing Dramas To Watch After ‘Hometown Cha Cha Cha’)
