Want To Eat Healthy? Start With These Snack Alternatives!

Nutritious yet delicious snacks, anyone?

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, being healthy has become increasingly important. In fact, in the latest consumer survey of a food production company, BENEO, Asians are now looking for healthier products to can boost energy. 

Conducted in Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, the survey revealed that tiredness or lack of energy has been a major health concern for consumers in the region. (Read: Here’s Why You Should Consider Mindful Eating Instead of Dieting)

However, not everyone, especially in the Philippines, can quickly shift to living a healthy lifestyle– much more switching to healthier products. Thankfully, since the pandemic began, several online shops have begun offering affordable healthy snacks. If you want to switch your bag of chips to something healthier, check out these alternatives! 

Healthy Snack Alternative: Nuts and edamame beans

Junk food, specifically potato chips, is really addictive. No wonder why it is always present in barkada trips or movie marathons. Its savory flavor and crunch are satisfying. But all the carbs, salt, and oil it contains can increase the risk of obesity and chronic diseases. Opt for unsalted nuts such as almonds, macadamia, walnuts, hazelnuts, and pecans that are low on carbs and high on nutrients, including vitamin E, magnesium, and selenium.

For other options, edamame beans are recommended as well! These whole and young soybeans are naturally gluten-free, low in calories, have no cholesterol, and are an excellent source of protein, iron, and calcium. Good to serve as munchies for your friends! 

Healthy Snack Alternative: Frozen fruits

Turn your sweet cravings into something nutritious! Instead of reaching for that candy in your pocket, switch to frozen fruits!  Several online shops and markets sell packs of frozen fruits such as berries, mangoes, peaches, avocados, and more. Healthy Snack Alternative: Cacao nibs and dark chocolate

Did you know that dark chocolates are way better than milk and white chocolates? It is loaded with nutrients and rich in fiber, iron, magnesium, copper, potassium, zinc, and other minerals. Dark chocolates are also a good source of antioxidants that could improve brain function, making them the best snack when you’re going to pull an all-nighter! 

If you want something more natural, check out cacao nibs. It is substantially lower in sugar compared to other chocolate products and the amount of minerals and plant compounds like flavonoids it contains have been associated with numerous health benefits.

Healthy Snack Alternative: Greek yogurt

Instead of finishing up a pint of artificially flavored ice cream, get your sweet craving fix with a protein and fiber-packed bowl or cup of Greek yogurt! The creamy and thick texture is somehow similar to ice cream, but it really differs in nutrients. It has a variety of fruity flavors too!
