‘Have your children vaccinated,’ DOH reminds public amidst measles outbreak.

On February 7, the Department of Health (DOH) declared that the measles outbreak which was first observed in Manila and Central Luzon has now expanded to include the Calabarzon region and the Western and Central parts of Visayas.

Measles is a life-threatening respiratory disease that can be transferred from one person to another through:

  • sneezing
  • coughing
  • close personal contact

Its symptoms include:

  • coughing
  • runny nose
  • red eyes/conjunctivitis
  • fever
  • skin rashes which last for more than three days

According to the DOH, the disease is best prevented through:

  • measles vaccination – which is available for free in government hospitals and health centers

This may sound like a lot of things to watch out for, but there is also no need to panic and add to the public frenzy. Last year, Pope Francis reminded everyone of their responsibility to discern real news from fake news, so make sure that the information that you get on the issue is accurate and from credible sources like the DOH website. After all, when it comes to keeping our families and ourselves safe and healthy, presence of mind is at the top of the list.
