Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, schools, businesses, and other sectors have been forced to stop during the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ). The academic year has been disrupted, and offices and businesses have ceased operations in the meantime due to the threats of the virus.
To help alleviate the worry, stress, and anxiety of people, the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) has launched the “GALING PCAARRD: Kontra COVID-19″ program.
The GALING PCAARRD: Kontra COVID-19 program consists of three components: Teknolohiya-Kaalaman para sa Pamayanan, Lingkod Alalay sa Pamayanan, and Pagkain at Kabuhayan sa Pamayanan.
Teknolohiya-Kaalaman para sa Pamayanan
This component is responsible for the sharing of information, education, and communication (IEC) materials to individuals. The materials are to be distributed in various platforms, including technological channels.
Lingkod Alalay sa Pamayanan
Lingkod Alalay sa Pamayanan is DOST-PCAARRD’s food distribution project. The agency is providing food products to affected communities, frontliners, and others who are in need. As of writing, they have already distributed oyster mushrooms in Ilocos Sur, Pangasinan, and La Union; fresh produce in Cordillera; duck eggs in Davao City and Sultan Kudarat; and other food products in Sultan Kudarat as well.
Pagkain at Kabuhayan sa Pamayanan
Through this component, DOST-PCAARRD will be providing livelihood projects for those greatly affected by the enhanced community quarantine. Some of these linclude Gulayan sa Pamayanan (urban/backyard gardening), Itlog at Manok sa Pamayanan (village-scale poultry production system), and Tilapia para sa Pamayanan (backyard tilapia farming).
The GALING PCAARRD: Kontra COVID-19 is a collaboration between the DOST-PCAARD, other government agencies, state universities and colleges, and local government units.
