ICYMI: Filipino Animations Are Coming to Netflix!

Cheers to all Pinoy animators out there!

The animation industry has been in the Philippines ever since the 1980s. From being involved in classic animations like Scooby-Doo, Tom and Jerry, The Incredibles, and Finding Nemo, to working with big companies like Walt Disney, Warner Brothers, Cartoon Network, and Marvel, Filipino animators have always had a special place in the industry.

Over the past few years, local animators have started producing their own animated films that constantly wowed moviegoers. This includes the adventure-fantasy comedy film, Dayo (2008); the story of a warrior princess, Urduja (2008); the 3D computer-animated adventure film, RPG Metanoia (2010); and the live-action animated film, Saving Sally (2016). But even though we already have a handful of talented animators in the country, locally-produced animation films are yet to reach an international audience. Luckily, it looks like the tables will soon turn as two Pinoy animations, Hayop Ka! The Nimfa Dimaano Story and Barangay 143, will start streaming on Netflix this October!

Barangay 143

Barangay 143 is a basketball-themed anime series that was first aired on GMA Network in 2018. The show was produced by Philippine-based studio for animations Synergy88 in collaboration with Japanese television network TV Asahi and August Media Holdings from Singapore. The anime series will premiere on Netflix on October 1.

The locally-produced Pinoy Anime features the voices of Cherie Gil, John Arcilla, Edu Manzano, Julie Ann San Jose, Kelley Day, Ruru Madrid, and Migo Adecer.

Hayop Ka! The Nimfa Dimaano Story

The film featuring the voices of actors Angelica Panganiban, Sam Milby, and Robin Padilla is set to premiere on Netflix on October 29. Hayop Ka! The Nimfa Dimaano Story will be the first adult-animation film from the Philippines to premiere on the streaming platform.

Hayop Ka! The Nimfa Dimaano Story is directed by Avid Liongoren, and written by Manny Angeles and Paulle Olivenza. It was also produced by actor Piolo Pascual, who also played a character in the movie.
