Today, you can relive that afternoon from your childhood as the latest anime film by critically acclaimed director Makoto Shinkai, Weathering With You, premieres today on Netflix. Shinkai is the man behind several popular anime films like The Garden of Words, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, and the 2016 blockbuster hit, Your Name.

It has an original light novel version.
Aside from the film and manga adaptation, Makoto Shinkai also wrote an original light novel version of the Weathering With You which was released the day before the film premiered in theaters. As of September 11, 2019, around 650,000 copies of the novel have already been sold.
It was Japan’s entry for an Oscar nomination.
Japan nominated the film as its entry for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards on February 9, 2020. This is the first time the country has selected an anime entry since Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke 20 years ago.
It surpassed Your Name in box office records.
Weathering With You has accumulated 1.64 billion yen ($15 million) over its first weekend in Japan, surpassing the previous box office record of 2016’s Your Name in just three days.
It was the first anime film to premiere in India.

Anime films don’t usually get released in India, but Weathering With You has made history. On October 11, 2019, the film premiered in different Indian cinemas with the help of The Indian Anime Movement—a petition that was created to bring the anime movie culture to the country. It was the first-ever Japanese Anime film to be screened in the country.
It had a massive audition for the main roles.
For the role of the main protagonists, Hodaka Morishima and Hina Amano, more than 2,000 voice actors have auditioned. Eventually, it was Kotaro Daigo and Nana Mori who got the roles. Meanwhile, the secondary characters of the film were voiced by returning crew members from Your Name.
