SLEX, Skyway, Other Expressways to Go Cashless Starting November

Here's a list of where to get RFID stickers and reload them!

If there’s anything that the COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed, it would be how we socialize and interact with people on a daily basis. We now keep a one-meter distance between us and our friends and limit our face-to-face talk time to less than 15 minutes, as health experts say that talking for more than 15 increases the risk of contracting viruses.

Even transactions are now either contactless, cashless, or over the internet through bank transfers. (Read: 5 Tips For Safer Transactions Online) Restaurants and other establishments have also put up designated pickup areas and counters so that their employees would not have to come in contact with the customers.

With these changes, even tollways have also started adopting a new system to fit the new normal. Starting November, the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), Skyway, NAIAX, STAR, and Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX) will be going cashless. This is in accordance with the Department of Transportation (DOTr)’s mandate for tollways to become contactless and cashless to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

Cashless Transactions

The expressways, owned by the San Miguel Corporation (SMC), increased its number of lanes to make travel faster and more efficient. The systems of the tollways have also been reconfigured to adapt to this change in transactions.

“We have completed the reconfiguration of these cashless lanes to help ensure a smooth transition and hopefully, minimal delays for motorists. Implementing this measure is a priority for us because it is in line with government health regulations and it will better protect both our motorists and expressway employees,” said SMC President Ramon Ang. He adds that they support this policy for cashless transactions as they believe it will help with addressing the health crisis. RFID stickers will be the main mode of payment for tollways—and SMC will be handing it out to motorists for free.
