4 Hacks to Fix Clogged Kitchen Sink

Unclog your kitchen sink without using any harmful chemicals.

We do a lot of chores in the kitchen which involves the sink so dealing with a clogged kitchen sink is as urgent as it is exhausting and annoying.

Unfortunately, not everyone can quickly call a plumber. Instead, some of us rely on pumping the sink in hopes that it will work. It is dreadful and time-consuming, especially when you’re in a rush or in the middle of preparing your dinner. That’s why it is also important to be mindful of what you dump in your kitchen sink!

Have you been plunging your kitchen sink for hours? Take a rest for now and read these five easy hacks to fix your clogged kitchen sink! (Read: Here’s Your Ultimate Guide For A Spotless, Germ-free Kitchen)

Fix clogged kitchen sink: Use hot water

The simplest hack to unclog your kitchen sink is through the use of hot water. Remove the standing water in the sink first. Boil a half-gallon of water and pour it directly into the drain opening. Let it sit for a couple of minutes, then open the faucet to see if the water drains. If it is draining slowly or standing still in the sink, repeat the process. It means that your kitchen sink is still clogged. You may need to repeat the process several times to fix the clog.

You can try another natural method if the boiling water doesn’t work! Instead of experimenting with chemicals that might only damage your kitchen sink, use household items that are already in your kitchen. Again, remove the standing water in the sink first. Pour one cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by a cup of vinegar. Observe the solution as it starts to bubble. Once it subsides, place the stopper or cover on the drain to seal the opening for 15 minutes. Run hot water to break up the clogs. Repeat the process if the water is standing still in the sink. (Read: 4 Time-Saving Tips to Defrost Your Freezer)

Fix clogged kitchen sink: Check the garbage disposal

Does your kitchen sink have a garbage disposal? If yes, you might be overlooking it! Grease and food particles build-up can easily clog your sink. Check your garbage disposal if it is working properly and not overheated. Make sure to turn it off first then carefully inspect the blades using pliers to remove food debris if there are any. After you unclog it, turn the power on and test the garbage disposal. See if the drainage is back to normal.

Fix clogged kitchen sink: Use a plumber’s snake

This method is the most effective, but it requires more patience and strength compared to the previous hacks. Plumber’s snake or drain snake is a slender and flexible tool that can clear clogs stuck further down the drainage system under the kitchen sink. You don’t have to worry if you don’t have this tool because you can use a wire coat hanger as an alternative! (Read: Virus-proof your home with these easy (and affordable!) ways)

Insert it in the drainage and feel if there is any food debris clinging into it. Try to crank the handle to dislodge the debris and pull it up off the drain. Avoid shoving it too roughly, as you might accidentally push the clog further down the pipe. Just keep doing it until you feel and observe that the blockage is gone. Run hot water down the drain to check if it is already working properly again.
