The Clark International Airport in Pampanga is one of the finalists in the Prix Versailles Architecture and Design Awards under the Airport category, which recognizes the best architecture and design projects in the world, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced.
Meanwhile, the Athletics Stadium at New Clark City in Tarlac has been shortlisted by the World Architecture Festival as among the best-completed buildings across the globe for the Sport-Completed Buildings category. (Read: LOOK: Tokyo Unveils COVID-19-Ready Olympic Village)
Clark International Airport
This year’s Prix Versailles Awards includes six airports, six university campuses, six passenger stations, and six sports facilities from hundreds of projects completed in 2020.
Unveiled last month, the Clark International Airport is a four-level terminal that spans 110,000 square meters and has the capacity to accommodate eight million passengers annually. (Read: The 10 Oldest Churches In The Philippines)
It is designed by Populous, and features a dedicated lounge for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW), walk-through commercial spaces, gender-neutral toilets, and elevators and escalators in each boarding gate.
Under the Airports category, the Clark International Airport will compete with the other five nominees– Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt in Germany, Athens International Airport in Greece, Wing Hazrat Sultan International Airport in Kazakhstan, New Plymouth Airport in New Zealand, and LaGuardia Airport-Terminal B in New York.
The World Selection finalists were chosen for their innovation, creativity, and design that reflects cultural heritage and ecological efficiency. Winners are expected to be announced in late November or early December this year.
The World Architecture Festival is set to take place at the FIL Exhibition Center in Lisbon, Portugal, from December 1 to 3.
In a statement, Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) President and Chief Executive Officer Vince Dizon welcomed the recognition and congratulated Budji+Royal Architecture+Design, the architectural partner for the stadium, as well as the thousands of workers who made the Athletics Stadium a reality. “We thank the World Architecture Festival for giving its nod to the New Clark City Athletics Stadium. It is another testament to the ingenuity of the stadium’s design and structure. Indeed, this is more proof that Filipinos can also be champions in producing outstanding facilities that are on par with other architectural masterpieces in the world,” Dizon said.
The Athletics Stadium is a centerpiece facility of the 30th Southeast Asian Games in 2019. The design was ably executed by MTD Philippines Inc., BCDA’s development partner in New Clark City. (Read: Raining Gold: SEA Games athletes are inspiring fellow Filipinos to be their own champions)
It is the first major sports hub constructed since the completion of the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila, in 1934. It is also the first-ever facility in the country to receive a Class 1 certification from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
The stadium has a 20,000-seating capacity, a nine-lane 400-meter track and field, and another four-lane warm-up track. It was previously nominated as one of the Top 10 best stadiums in the world at the annual Stadium of the Year Awards.
