The Secret Behind Your Favorite Chocolate Cupcakes

We look into its colorful history—and most classic recipes!

Chocolate cupcakes are a staple during events and parties, especially if it’s a children’s party or a birthday party. That’s because children love chocolate and quite literally everything that has chocolate in it or is chocolate-flavored. And who can blame them? Chocolate is creamy, delicious, and goes well with lots of desserts!

So, to celebrate this oh-so chocolatey day, My Pope looks into the origins of chocolate cupcakes—and lists two of the most classic recipes that you can try at home!

Cakes in Small Cups

Back in the day, cupcakes weren’t known as “cupcakes.” They were only called “cakes in small cups,” a quite literal name coined by baker Amelia Simmons in 1796. It was only in 1828 when the term “cupcake” was first mentioned by Eliza Leslie in her cookbook. And even then, cupcakes weren’t a big deal to the public—it was just another dessert.

By the year 1919, food company Hostess launched the first-ever mass-produced cupcake, and the product took the public by storm! However, back then, the toppings used weren’t the sweets that we know today—in fact, they mostly used dried fruits to top the cupcakes.

It wasn’t until the 1950s when British Prime Minister Winston Churchill told cupcake manufacturers to change the toppings they use—from dried fruits to something sweeter, like icing or frosting. And that’s how the iced cupcakes were born! (Read: DIY Baking Substitutes for Basic Ingredients)

Since then, bakers all around the world have created their own flavors and variations of the icing to complement their small cakes, with the chocolate-iced cupcake becoming one of the most popular up to this day.
