This youth group just donated P240,000 worth of fishing gear and boat engines to fisherfolks in Puerto Princesa City

The Catholic Youth Movement (CYM) of Puerto Princesa City used their God-given talents to help the city’s fisherfolk community.

35 beneficiaries from the seven coastal communities of Matahimik, Bagong Silang, Liwanag, Pagkakaisa, San Isidro, Bagong Sikat, and Bancao-Bancao received fishing gear and boat engines with a total cost of P240,000. Aside from the gear and engines, the CYM also invited a resource speaker from the provincial government to conduct a training session for the fisherfolk. The funds were raised during a two-day benefit concert Hashtag (#) Mo, Himig Ko held in May.

“It is mainly po talaga [for] pure service. ‘Yong community namin [sa CYM] ang vision talaga is ‘yong mga kabataan ay mamuhay ng naaayon sa sinasabi ng simbahan o naayon sa kalooban ng Diyos. Iyon ‘yong naituro sa amin, iyon ‘yong formation na naibigay sa amin kaya siguro rooted talaga kami sa service. Somehow makapag-touch ng buhay ng ibang tao through our gifts,” CYM Representative Efrel Piñero said.

CYM started in 1981 as a group with the aim to spread the Word of God to their peers and others. As the years passed, members began extending their reach and began livelihood programs to help the underprivileged citizens in their city.

It was in 2016 when CYM held their very first benefit concert. The proceeds of the said event benefitted 200 residents in one barangay through a medical mission. Through the years, the group has organized various activities such as prison visits  and Christmas caroling for the sick. Before an actual gift-giving, the group first offers a song performance.

CYM’s mission is an answer to the call of Pope Francis, where the new generation to experiences their mission and vocation in accordance to the path Jesus took, while the previous generations guide them toward their goals. As Pope Francis said, “Let us encourage the generosity which is typical of the young and help them to work actively in building a better world. Youth do not solely need material things. Above all, they need to have those non-material values which are the spiritual heart of a people… spirituality, generosity, solidarity, perseverance, fraternity, and joy.”
