Caritas Manila Warns of ‘Fake Donation Drives’ Amid Typhoon Relief Efforts

As Filipinos struggle to get by, many are still taking advantage of the situation.

Amid the ongoing relief efforts to help the victims of typhoons Rolly and Ulysses, Caritas Manila has issued a public advisory that encourages everyone to verify the organizations first before they make cash or in-kind donations.

According to Caritas Manila executive director Fr. Anton Pascual, there are some individuals who are using the names of different charity organizations to deceive those who intend to lend a helping hand in the crisis. These people claim to raise money supposedly for the victims of recent calamities, with some even posing as Caritas workers when asking for donations. “Beware of fake donation drives,” Pascual said. “Let’s help our fellow Filipinos and not take advantage of the calamity. Keep spreading the charity virus.”

They also announced that its COVID-19 charity response has reached P1.7 billion. It is in partnership with Project Ugnayan—a fundraising initiative by the country’s leading corporations and business families. It is headed by Ayala Corporation and COO Fernando Zobel de Ayala and is in cooperation with the Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation.
