Can the world’s ‘largest ocean cleanup’ save our planet?

Pope Francis has always been vocal about his concern for the environment. He never fails to include the topic in his speeches, often reminding us that “as stewards of God’s creation, we are called to make the earth a beautiful garden for the human family.” Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organization founded in 2013 by 18-year-old Dutch inventor Boyan Slat, is doing just that. This October, the organization will be deploying its $20 million system designed to collect up to 1.8 trillion pieces of ocean trash.

Ocean Cleanup’s floating boom system is now in the final stages of testing before it is officially deployed in the world’s largest offshore plastic accumulation zone, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. As explained by Forbes, the floating boom system is designed in a U-shaped formation with 10 feet of netting attached beneath it. Through this U-shaped system, trash (including smaller pieces) is extracted from the ocean. But here’s the more exciting part: Once the booms are full, a vessel will be sent to collect the plastics and ship them back to land for sorting and recycling!

Dozens of booms will be left floating along the currents between California and Hawaii, with each boom expected to trap up to 150,000 pounds of plastic per year. According to reports, the project will be cleaning up half of the trash in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch within its first five years of operation.

Ocean Cleanup is the first company to have a deployable system that is able to clean up ocean trash on a large scale. They are backed by big names in the tech industry, such as the co-founder of PayPal, Peter Thiel,  and the chief executive of, Marc Benioff.

Now this is one project Lolo Kiko will surely approve of!
