LOOK: New Book Highlights the Beauty of Shrines, Pilgrimage Sites in the PH

The 302-page book is a comprehensive documentation of the country's cathedrals, shrines, and churches.

A new book about the Philippines’ shrines and pilgrimage sites was launched on April 8 by Claretian Publications and a lay Catholic organization.

The book, titled The Role of Shrines in view of the New Evangelization: Pope Francis’ Theology of Shrines and Pilgrimages applied in the Philippine Context, was authored by Bro. Kendrick Ivan Panganiban. It highlights the importance of shrines and pilgrimages in the Church today.

The launch was held through a virtual ceremony and is part of the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines. (Read: Prayer for 500 Years of Christianity in the Philippines)

Book About Shrines and Pilgrimages

The 302-page book was endorsed by both the bishops’ Episcopal Commission on Liturgy (ECL) and the Episcopal Commission on Migrants and Itinerant People (ECMI), whose apostolate includes the organization of shrines across the country.

“This will surely guide our local churches in the planning, management, and promotion of shrines that are effective signs of hope, cradles of genuine worship of God, venues for conversion and renewal, and places of fraternal charity and justice,” said Bishop Victor Bendico of Baguio, ECL chairman.

Aside from discussing the making of shrines and the different principles and priorities behind it, the book also sheds light on the different Catholic sites in the Philippines. (Read: Manila Archdiocese Names 10 Pilgrim Churches for 500 Years of PH Christianity)

It serves as the first-ever comprehensive documentation of the country’s cathedrals, minor basilicas, national shrines, archdiocesan and diocesan shrines, and churches.

New Evangelization

Because of its comprehensive content, the book will be used by the Association of Catholic Shrines and Pilgrimages in the Philippines for its evaluation of the administration of shrines. This in light of the New Evangelization this jubilee year.

“The association believes that his evaluation tool will help in the deepening of our commitment as shrine administrators and promoters of devotion,” said Fr. Roderick Castro, president. (Read: UST Journal to Release Special Issues on 500 Years of PH Christianity)
