3 Facts You Didn’t Know About Blackpink Rosé’s Childhood

Her parents got her name randomly out of a name book!

If you’re a Kpop fan, or just a music fan in general, you would have surely heard of the Korean girl group BLACKPINK, composed of Jisoo, Jennie, Lisa, and Rosé. In just four years, the group has already amassed 35.8 million followers on Instagram alone, and has over 16 million monthly listeners on Spotify— a testament to how good and talented these women are.

Now, fans and casual listeners of BLACKPINK have more things to be excited about when it comes to this girl group. That’s because after Jennie’s 2018 solo song, and the launch of her own YouTube channel last January 16, another member has also begun her solo career. Rosé, their New Zealand-born member, released her first album entitled “R” on March 12, and launched her own YouTube channel a week later! In the very first video on her channel, Rosé told stories of her life, childhood, and musical journey before becoming the global superstar she is now. Here are some of the fun facts she said!

#1: Her name was straight out of a name book.

Rosé is the daughter of South Korean immigrants who moved to New Zealand. Because of this, she needed an English name for her birth certificate, apart from her Korean name (Park Chae-young). That’s why her parents bought a baby name book to find a suitable name for their daughter— and her dad loved the name Roseanne, which they agreed upon for their daughter.

“So they were searching through names, and he [dad] came across the name Roseanne. I think dad found that name to be really nice so decided on that,” Rosé said.

#2: BLACKPINK Rosé loved taking naps

Like any of us, Rosé loved to take naps when she was a kid. “I would sleep for 2-3 hours after coming home from school,” she recalled. After her nap, she says she would then play the piano, which she really enjoyed and helped develop her love for music. (Read: Explainer: The Anatomy of a Kpop Album)

#3: Rosé used to dream of becoming like Beyoncé or MJ

Even back in the day, Beyoncé was already a big name— and of course, who would not know who Michael Jackson was? These extremely talented performers are two people whom the public looked up to, especially those who have a passion for music. And even little Rosé looked up at them, wanting to be just like them!

“When I was really little, my dreams were very absurd,” the 24-year-old says, “I really wanted to become a great singer like Beyoncé or Michael Jackson.” And now, she’s made a name for herself in the industry she used to only dream of becoming a part of.
