They say, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” It might sound cliche but this phrase has been a standard for encouraging optimism and resilience over the years. However, we can also agree life is more complex — and that it’s easier said than done.
Throughout the year, it felt like it was a typhoon of lemons. With the natural calamities that went on our way and the health crisis that we are currently in, it can be especially difficult to summon hope and inner strength to push through these hard times. One of the people who was hit hard by these unfortunate events is comedian and noontime show host, Alan Quilantang or “Allan K.” On Saturday’s episode of Eat Bulaga’s Bawal Judgemental segment, Allan detailed his experiences when he caught the deadly and contagious COVID-19
Allan K’s COVID-19 Journey
In the show, Allan K revealed that when he started getting flu-like symptoms, he was at first “in denial” about contracting the virus and took medicine for it. However, his 38-degree temperature did not subside even with medicine. He said that his temperature continued to rise and that he lost his sense of taste and smell— that’s when he decided to get tested for the virus. Upon testing positive for COVID-19, Allan K was rushed to the hospital and soon moved to the intensive care unit for three days and three nights. Doctors told his friends his case was severe.
Year of Challenges and Pain
Allan K also turned emotional when he expressed his frustration over his other obstacles in the year 2020— losing his two younger siblings and having to close down his two comedy bars due to the pandemic. (Read: 5 Ways to Strengthen Relationships While Social Distancing)
“Unang-una namatay ’yung bunso namin, si Jun-jun. Ako nagturo ng kanta nung maliit, gulat ako nasa banda na siya,” Allan K shared. (Read: Dwayne Johnson Shares Learnings After Contracting COVID-19)
“After two months, ’yung sister ko na tumira sakin ng 17 years tapos umuwi na lang ng Bacolod … namatay silang pareho na nasa pandemic tayo, so sinunog sila na hindi ko sila nakita. Dalawa magkasunod. Two months lang pagitan. Tapos nagsara pa ’yung dalawa kong bars. Sabi ko hindi ito pwede mangyari sa ’kin,” Allan K said, crying.
Faith Amid Hardship
Allan K shared that on the days while he was laying on his hospital bed, he had his faith that kept himself going. He especially mentioned the Bible verse Exodus 15:26, saying that it inspired him to believe in the Lord and hold on to his faith.
“Kumapit ako. Sabi noon, ‘I am the God that healeth thee.’ Alam niyo maya’t maya ko ’yun sinasabi. ‘Lord you are the God that healeth me. You just have to say the word and You will heal my disease,’” Allan K said. (Read: Panalangin Laban sa Panganib na Dulot ng COVID-19)
Fortunately, Allan K has since recovered and is now back to his usual life. The year has brought him hardships and pain, but he said he learned to just have faith in God.
“Manalig lang talaga. Lahat dadaanan lahat ng pagsubok. Madadaanan nating lahat. Wag kakalimutan na nandyan Siya. Kung may kinuha man sa ’yo, may ibabalik yan,” the comedian said.
