US-based Filipina actress Aina Dumlao made waves on the internet after appearing on the Season 17 finale of the long-running medical drama show “Grey’s Anatomy” in June this year. Her role in the episode “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” was as a nurse–a job that many Filipinos have abroad.
But the role wasn’t just a ticket to further fame for Aina. It raised awareness of how the situation of Filipino nurses is in the US. According to a CNN report in December 2020, nearly a third of nurse deaths in the US are Filipinos. This is an alarming statistic as Filipino nurses only account for 4% of the nursing population in the US. (Read: The Stars Who Left Grey’s Anatomy: Where Are They Now?)
“I’m thrilled about the way ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ broke through the Filipino community. The role truly resonated with a lot of nurses everywhere and had the maximum impact,” Aina said in an interview with Inquirer. “I was getting very emotional messages from Filipinos all over the world. And that, for me, was the reason why I wanted to be an actor—because I’d like to reach as many people as possible,” she added.
The next step
But after her overnight success (which, according to her, was 10 years in the making), what’s next for the actress?
Well, Aina landed a role in an Australian miniseries! The four-episode long series, entitled ‘The Unusual Suspects’, is a comedy-drama show about a stolen multi-million dollar necklace from the home of a self-made Filipino businesswoman.
Aina stars as Evie De La Rosa, a nanny who is dubbed as a ‘godmother’ of Filipino overseas workers, who is included in the list of suspects for the necklace heist.
And the show was well received by viewers, both Filipino and foreigners. While it references Filipino culture and practices like the large balikbayan boxes OFWs send to their families back home and our quirky personalities in a comedic way, The Unusual Suspects does not make fun of us as other comedies do.
