Meet the 66yo Lola who never stops pursuing her love for acting

Roberta Daleon—a.k.a. Ube Lola in the showbiz industry—has always wanted to be an artista. For her, acting is not just a pastime. It is her heart’s true desire. When we asked if she wanted to take on the role of Lola Belinda for My Pope’s Grandparents Day commercial, A Special Delivery, Ube Lola gamely agreed to be part of this project that brings family members closer together. We sit down with our star as she tells us about her loved ones and her thirst for acting.

Have you always wanted to be an actress?

Aba, oo! When I was about 5 or 6 years old, I would listen to the radio and cry in front of the mirror. Rumarampa din ako sa harap ng salamin. I did not pursue acting then because I lived in the province so I had no way of knowing how to become an artista.

How then were you able to start acting?

Well, God hears our heart’s desire. Siguro alam Niya na maliit pa ako gusto ko na talaga. It happened when I was attending a Zumba class in Luneta Park. I passed by a shoot. In the scene, they were trying to make children laugh. Naisip ko, “pano tatawa ‘ yan, ‘e mga bata ‘yan?” so I approached the kids and made funny faces! E ‘di tawanan, tapos ang eksena! After that, the talent coordinator came to me and asked if I wanted to be an artista. Aba, oo. Gustong gusto ko nga ‘e! The next Sunday, I was in a feature already for Wish Ko Lang. I was 55 years old at the time.

Do you have other interests aside from acting?

I have a beauty parlor. I started as a beautician in Lucena, Quezon. I actually stopped acting for five years to focus on my business before I decided to pursue acting again. Pinursige ko na! For acting, I will drop whatever I’m doing. Even my beauty parlor, stop muna.

What did you enjoy most about your role in A Special Delivery?

Meron din akong paboritong apo! Pero in real life, I treat them all fairly. I also enjoy this role because of Zumba! It’s the humility.
