The existence of angels has been a truth of the faith since time immemorial. Their presence in the Bible is an incorruptible testimony to this. To Christians, Angels are spirits that exist for God and in Him. They are also close to humans through their faithfulness to God and His creatures.
Angels, therefore, play the primary role of serving as God’s messengers to humanity. They are the ones who guide us on our journey and watch over us on the daily. But did you know that angels are organized into different ranks and graces?
According to the Bible, angels are organized into a sort of “Heavenly Court” that is being led by the Archangels. In Catholic tradition, there are three Archangels—Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael—who have the same task as the common angels but have duties that are higher and more important. (Read: Looking for guidance, protection? Here are three Guardian Angels to call on!)
According to the Sacred Scriptures, each Archangel has a particular mission that must be accomplished. St. Michael, the protector, is the warrior who fights against Satan and his emissaries. St. Gabriel, the messenger, is the one who revealed to Daniel the secrets of God’s plan, announced to Zechariah the birth of John the Baptist, and informed Mary of the birth of Jesus Christ. Lastly, St. Raphael, the healer, is the angel who accompanied Tobias in his perilous journey and healed his father from blindness.
In general, the Archangels are the ones who communicate God’s Will to humans in various ways. They serve as an inspiration for humanity, and play the role of catalysts of divine grace among His people.
Today, on the feast day of Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, let us reach out to them in prayer!
A Powerful Prayer to the Three Archangels
Heavenly King, You have given us archangels
to assist us during our pilgrimage on earth.
Saint Michael is our protector;
I ask him to come to my aid,
fight for all my loved ones,
and protect us from danger.
Saint Gabriel is a messenger of the Good News;
I ask him to help me
clearly hear Your voice
and to teach me the truth.
Saint Raphael is the healing angel;
I ask him to take my need for healing
and that of everyone I know,
lift it up to Your throne of grace
and deliver back to us the gift of recovery.
Help us, O Lord,
to realize more fully the reality of the archangels
and their desire to serve us.
pray for us.
