Today, September 26, the Catholic community celebrates the feast day of Saints Cosmas and Damian.
Little is known about the lives of these two saints. Some reports claim that Cosmas and Damian were twin brothers who were born in Arabia. There are also others that say that the two were skilled doctors who actively practiced the Christian faith and healed patients without asking for any payment. While we may never know the real and exact story behind Saints Cosmas and Damian, we can still be certain about one thing in their lives: They were prominent practitioners of medicine who suffered martyrdom in Syria during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian (around 303 AD).
With this, we can say that Cosmas and Damian lived as men of strong faith—a claim that is best manifested not only by their unfortunate fate, but also by the crowds of faithful who passed on their story to the younger generations.
Today, Catholics from around the world would still pay their respects to Saints Cosmas and Damian. Shrines and churches are also built in their names, with many faithful seeking their healing intercession.
